The Numismatic Cabinet in the Royal Castle in Warsaw presents the collection of coins originated by Stanisław August Poniatowski. The exposition consists of 15 thousand coins, medals, banknotes, and decorations related to Poland and Polishness. It is complemented by the rich thematical library.
The collection started the tradition known as Cabinet des Médailles (Numismatic Cabinet). The major part of the original collection was sold after the death of the king. Later, it was confiscated during the November Uprising and then handed over to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine. After the rebuilt of the castle, it was decided to continue the tradition and create the present numismatic collection. Most of the exhibits come from donations of Poles living abroad and institutions. The exposition presents, among others, 3234 coins and medals from the collection of general Jerzy Węsierski, 822 Polish medals from Stanisław Gawroński, 1119 Polish medals from between the 19th and 20th century from Jarosław Kuryłowicz, commemorative specimens from National Bank of Poland, and hundreds of items donated by private persons and institutions.Less
