Monument to the Fallen and Murdered in the East

Local name: Pomnik Poległych i Pomordowanych na Wschodzie

The Monument to the Fallen and Murdered in the East in Warsaw was designed and made by Polish sculptor Maksymilian Biskupski. It depicts Latin and Orthodox crosses, Muslim tombstone, and matzevah - Jewish stele - piled on a railway flatcar.

41 railroad ties with names of places where battles occurred in September 1939 in East Poland and Polish people were executed are situated in front of the flatcar.

It was unveiled in 1995 to commemorate Poles who were prisoned and murdered in East Poland. It symbolizes, among others, victims of the Katyn massacre and prisoners of labor camps in Siberia. The construction was initiated by Polish social activist and member of the opposition in the Polish People's Republic - Wojciech Ziembiński. The monument is taken care of by the Federation of Katyn Families and combatant organizations.
