Mariensztat

Local name: Mariensztat

Situated in the northern part of Powiśle close to the Royal Castle, Mariensztat housing estate is part of the Warsaw Śródmieście district. Its name comes from the German "Marienstadt" - the "City of Mary", after the wife of the 18th-century owner of this place, Eustachy Potocki. The former Mariensztat was almost completely destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising - few preserved fragments of original buildings can be seen today in the streets of Mariensztat and Bednarska. At present, there is a housing estates built in the late 1940s, referring to the eighteenth-century small-town development.

Mariensztat was the first settlement in Warsaw built after the Second World War on the rubble of pre-war development. Interestingly, it has become a competition arena of work - house number 19 was created in just 19 days of intensive, three shift work. Today the Mariensztat is a peaceful, green and low-rise building, a place of rest from the hustle and bustle of the city.

This is where the action of the popular movie "The Adventures in Mariensztat" with Lydia Korsakin and Tadeusz Schmidt takes place. Irena Santor also sang about the "little apartment in Mariensztat".
