Jewish Cemetery

Local name: Cmentarz Żydowski

The Cemetery in Powązki in Warsaw is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the world. It covers the area of over 30 ha and consists of 200 thousand matzevahs. It is divided into several parts: orthodox (including female and male), progressive, military, ghetto, ordinal, and children's.

The cemetery contains many monumental tombstones of which the oldest ones come from the beginning of the 19th century. Depending on the parts, shapes of matzevahs differ from each other. The orthodox part, where rabbis and Talmudists are buried, consists of simple tombstones without decorations. The progressive part, on the other hand, is full of impressive and richly decorated tombs.

The Mausoleum of Three Writers can also be found here. It was designed and made by sculptor Abraham Ostrzega and is a place of rest of Icchok Lejb Perec, Jakub Dinezon, and Szymon An-ski.
