The oldest movable staircase in Poland today functions in a modified form. In the basement next to the WZ tunnel you can still see the original bas-reliefs and the preserved control panel with Russian inscriptions. Currently the original stairs have been redecorated and replaced with modern construction elements.
The first moving stairs after the war appeared in Warsaw in 1949, and their task was to merge the current Solidarity Avenue with the Castle Square. The installation was brought from Moscow, as evidenced by information preserved today. They consisted of three strings whose total throughput was 10,000 people per hour. The length of each string is 30 m, and the difference between the base and the top is 12 m. The modern construction of this time was very successful until June 30, 1997, when the last thread was switched off due to failure and lack of spare parts.
Since 2005 you can again ride the oldest stairs in Poland. This is the result of their renovation and introduction of upgrades in the form of significantly lighter mechanisms, a new staircase and lift for the disabled. Currently they are two meters less than the original.
