City walls

Local name: Mury obronne

The defensive walls of Warsaw are a double string of city walls erected in the 13th-16th century. Their length was about 1.2 kilometers, they covered an area of 8.5 hectares. They consisted of many gates and gates, through which one entered the city, and towers, which served as defensive and integrating structures. Today they are a well-known tourist attraction of the city. The walls are interestingly highlighted, and in their vicinity there are Monument of the Little Insurgent and Sculpture Oświęcim II.

After the damage caused during the Swedish invasion, the city walls were partially demolished. Some fortifications were also used as walls of newly built buildings. The first attempts at renovation were made only in 1936 under the leadership of Jan Zachwatowicz. The reconstruction work was stopped by the war and the destruction of Warsaw, however, along with the reconstruction of the city, the reconstruction of old fortifications began. It officially ended on July 22, 2008.
