Archaeological Museum

Local name: Muzeum Archeologiczne

*** Temporarily closed due to renovation ***

The State Archaeological Museum is located in the historic building of the former Warsaw Arsenal. At exhibitions you can admire the monuments depicting the history and culture of the inhabitants of Polish lands from the Stone Age to the times of the first historical rulers of Poland. The oldest monuments date from 100,000 years ago.

The Archaeological Museum organizes numerous excavations, popularizes archeology, conducts museum lessons, as well as live archeology demonstrations, i.e. demonstrations of old techniques and processing of raw materials. Since 1995, together with the University of Warsaw, the Museum organizes archaeological festivals in Biskupin.

The building in which the museum is located was erected in 1643 during the reign of King Władysław IV Waza. After the fall of the November Uprising, there was a prison here, followed by the Archive. During the German occupation, the famous Action under the Arsenal took place here - freeing of "Rudy" from the hands of the Nazis carried out by scouts of "Grey Ranks".
