Szydłów Castle

Local name: Zamek w Szydłowie

The castle in Szydłów is one of the largest fortresses built during the Kazimierz Wielki times. It stands on a hill above the river Ciekąca and is the main tourist attraction of the city. The knight's hall located in the area is considered to be the best preserved royal Gothic building of a residential nature in Poland.

According to medieval chronicles, the initiator of the defense building in Szydłowie was Kazimierz Wielki. Its location was chosen on the hill above the Ciekawa River. A stronghold with elongated, polygonal shape emerged. Its walls have been preserved and the royal palace, closed to the south, is called the Knights Hall.

Many scholars believe that it was created in the days of Władysław Jagiełło, as would be indicated by architectural associations with the castle in the Hungarian Visegrad. In the palace you can also see ostrołukowe portals and window frames. Similar in Poland only in Wawel. The 17th-century gate with the coat of arms of Zygmunt III Vasa is in the castle.
