Hermitage of Blessed Salomea
Local name: Pustelnia Błogosławionej Salomei
Salomea's Hermitage is a place where, since 1262, the Poor Clares from Zawichost lived including Blessed Salomea, sister of Bolesław V the Chaste. The complex consists of the church, praying caves, and the house - hermitage of Salomea. It was built in the 17th century, however, the church's structure has traces of previous Romanesque and Gothic buildings.
Blessed Salomea entered the Poor Clares after the death of her husband Koloman Węgierski. Nuns moved from Zawichost to Grodzisko, located on the hill over the Prądnik Valley. It was a safe shelter during the times of raids. Salomea led hermetic life and died in 1268 in the odor of sanctity. Grodzisk and Salomea became famous in the 17th century when her beatification was performed. The new, Baroque church was built on the hill, in the place of previous Romanesque and Gothic churches. The chapel resembling praying caves was constructed behind it. There is also the obelisk dedicated to the Battle of Vienna. It's a pole placed on the elephant's back. The hermitage can be found below, on the slope. It's a small house with a small altar, stone bed, Christ's grave, and the remains of stucco decorations.Less
