Ojców Castle

Local name: Zamek w Ojcowie

The Ojców Castle is part of the so-called Eagles' Nests, strongholds built by Casimir the Great on the border between Lesser Poland and Silesia. Today they are picturesque ruins with fragments of defensive walls, a tower and an entrance gate. There is a nice view of the Prądnik valley from here. A small exhibition devoted to the history of the castle operates in the castle gate. You can see here its model from the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The castle stands on a hill above the Prądnik Valley. At his feet a father's spa developed, from which wooden villas have survived to this day. The stronghold was built by Casimir the Great around the mid-fourteenth century. He called it Eye and Rock, in memory of hiding in the local caves of his father, Władysław Łokietek. From this name the later Fathers came into being.

The castle passed through the hands of various families. For some time, its owner was Queen Bona. In the nineteenth century, it began to decline. Renovation and protection of the ruins was carried out only after the object was taken over by Ojców National Park. From the walls of the castle you can enjoy views of the countryside. From the Prądnik valley, the shingle-covered defensive tower is best visible. At the entrance there is a statue of the Virgin Mary from the second half of the nineteenth century.
