Town Hall "Jacek"

Local name: Ratusz "Jacek"

Baroque building from the 18th century, with its characteristic tower, at the top of which is the image of a man carrying a globe. It is associated with the local legend. Today the town hall has commercial and cultural functions. The Regional Museum was also created there.

Legend of "Jack" tells the story of a strong-pupil and employee of Princess Alexandra. When the duchess commissioned the construction of the town hall, "Jacek" argued with the foreman and pushed him off the roof. The inhabitants demanded the death penalty, but the duchess decided to only banish him from the city. Nobody saw him again. Since then, sculpture is a symbol of the city.

The Regional Museum presents a historical exhibition referring to the 500-year history of the city and the Podlasie culture. There are over 13,000 objects in the fields of art, ethnography, history, archival photography and archeology.

On the town hall tower, the first lightning rod was installed in Poland.
