Liw Castle

Local name: Zamek w Liwie

The castle of Liwa was erected at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries on the left bank of the Liwiec River. It was built on an artificial island amidst marshy and swampy terrain. He defended the crossing of the river, which in the past marked the Polish-Lithuanian border. The gate tower and the rooms of the restored manor house were made available for viewing. There are also Gothic cellars of the former Big House and some of the surrounding walls.

It was rebuilt twice - by Princess Anna Mazowiecka and Queen Bona Sfora, which owes its period of splendor. During the Swedish invasions in the late 17th and early 18th centuries it was mostly destroyed. The fortress has never been rebuilt.

At the end of the 18th century a brick Baroque mansion was erected on the ruins of the castle, which was adjacent to the brick castle tower. It now houses the Armory Museum, which houses an unusually rich collection of white, fire and spear weapons from the 15th to the 20th centuries.

During World War II, the castle avoided demolition by deliberately misrepresenting German occupiers as to the Teutonic origins of the castle by the archaeologist Otto Warpechowski. Renovation work undertaken by the Germans was interrupted in 1944 when the historical truth came to light.
