"Orthodox art" exhibition
Local name: Wystawa "Sztuka cerkiewna"
The collection of over 1,200 objects is considered one of the most valuable in Podkarpackie. It includes works created between the 12th and 20th centuries. You can watch here, among others performances of Christ Pantokrator and Our Lady of Hodegetria, the Last Judgment, icons depicting saints, a magnificent iconostasis, as well as liturgical objects, e.g. crosses, banners, robes and old prints. The exhibits are arranged in chronological order, which allows to observe the changes taking place in church art.
The Sanok region is a borderland, a kind of cultural melting pot, in which for centuries the traditions of East and West met. The works of art collected in the museum come from Greek Catholic and Orthodox churches of south-eastern Poland and areas of today's Ukraine.
The word "icon" comes from Greek and means image. However, the icon is not an ordinary image, but a symbol of the real presence of the saint imagined on it, the mediator between heaven and earth.
