Memorial Oaks

Local name: Dęby Pamięci

21 Memorial Oaks are natural monuments commemorating victims of the Katyn massacre who lived in Sanok or were related to this city. First trees were planted in 2009 and next in 2012. It was possible thanks to the efforts of Polish historian, social activist, and Scoutmaster - Krystyna Chowaniec. The oaks are located near the Cross of the Memory of Victims of Polish "Golgota Wschodu" in the Katyn Alley in the Central Cemetery in Sanok which was entered in the register of objects of cultural heritage.

The idea of planting oaks commemorating innocent people killed in Katyn was proposed in 2008. The originator of social program "Katyn...saving from oblivion" under the umbrella of president Lech Kaczyński was Józef Joniec, Piarist. It was decided that every 21857 murdered Pole in Katyn will be commemorated with Memorial Oak.
