Church of the Transfiguration

Local name: Kościół Przemienienia Pańskiego

The Church of the Transfiguration is a parish neo-Romanesque church built on the ruins of the much older house of prayer. It's characterized by the two-tower facade and the interior decorated with the art nouveau polychromy. The oldest monument in the church is the 16th-century tombstone of Sebastian Lubomirski from the previous building.

The parish church was built in the times of Casimir the Great. It was dedicated to Saint Michael and for about 500 years was the most important church in Sanok. It was here where Władysław Jagiełło married Elizabeth Granowska. It burnt at the end of the 18th century. The new building was constructed a hundred years later. During that time, Sanok Parish operated in the Franciscan church. The remainings of the old church are foundations in St. Michael's Square.

The Church of the Transfiguration was built at the end of the 19th century in the then fashionable style of historicism. It has its structure enriched with neo-Romanesque features. Its facade is topped by the triangular top with two towers at the sides. The three-nave interior with the transept was covered with the art nouveau, pastel polychromy at the beginning of the 20th century. The interior largely comes from the 19th and 20th centuries.
