Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Church The elevation of the Holy Cross in Sanok is under the protection of the Franciscan Order. It stands in the immediate vicinity of the market, on the sloping overhang. Today the temple is neo-gothic, although its origins are much earlier. The interior is covered with polychrome from the beginning of the 20th century. There are several sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Franciscans received permission to settle inside the walls of Sanok in the fourteenth century. Originally inhabited wooden convent. In the seventeenth century they built a Baroque temple, which after the abolition of the Order by the Austrian authorities served as a custody. In the 19th century the church was consuming a fire. Its reconstruction at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century was directed by urban architect Władysław Beksiński, grandfather of a well known painter and graphic artist.

During the reconstruction the church lost its baroque qualities. Today, in its shape stands the neo-gothic tower with a pointed top. The interior is similar to the plan for the Latin cross. A side chapel dedicated to St. Francis and Maximilian Kolbe are added to the aisle. The interior is covered with floral and figural polychromy originating from the beginning of the 20th century. In the main altar there is a crucifix from the 17th century, which was rescued from a fire.
