The Old Marych is a typical Poznań guy - a fictional character, that is made up of various stereotypes about residents of Poznań. It was created for the sake of a radio play in Polskie Radio Poznań. In 2001 it was given a monument in a busy part of Polwiejska Street. The sculpture shows a man with a bicycle, dressed in a work suit and walking from Cegielski Factory to the city center.
When in 1998 Gazeta Wyborcza announced a contest "Resident of Poznan on a pedestal", many famous and accomplished individuals were reported. But during voting, the only fictional character has won - the Old Marych, a hero of the radio play speaking the Poznan dialect. The monument was placed near the promenade, so it could fit into the crowd of people walking in different directions. Walking with a bicycle with a folder on the steering wheel " a typical Poznan guy" is a famous place for tourists to take photographs.Less
