Budnicy Houses

Local name: Domki Budnicze

Budnicy Houses is an example of terraced housing within the Poznań market square. It consists of narrow, colorful tenement houses with arcades. Poor merchants and craftsmen lived and have their stalls there. Houses, that were severely destroyed during the Second World War, were given new polychromes in the mid-twentieth century.

Budnicy Houses in Poznan were established in the beginning of the 15th century. There are early-Renaissance tenement houses with arcades, where trade of candles, herrings and salt was taking place. Their name came from Budnicy guild, which meant people, that were obtaining resources from the forest, like potash, tar and turpentine. It was their seat. In 19th century the arcades were walled up. The tenements regained their former appearance during the restoration after the war damage. Then too their facades were covered with geometric polychromes.

Budnicy Houses have 2-3 floors. They are narrow and connect with each other. Arcades are supported on thin columns made of sandstone. There are restaurants and cafes, as well as stalls with the works of Poznań artists.
