Municipal Scales

Local name: Waga Miejska

Municipal Scales is located in the Old Market Square. Primarily it was a seat of an official, who was weighting goods for a fee. After the war it was a seat of a Registry office and, until today, wedding ceremonies are performed here. In 2009 the building was transformed into the Cultural Center, which organizes numerous concerts, performances, exhibitions and conferences, etc.

In the old times, one of the main sources of income for residents of Poznań was trading, and to guarantee its fairness, the merchants were inspected. To accomplish this goal, Municipal Scales were created to weigh goods, that were intended for the city market. First building was built in the second half of 13th century. In 16th century it was rebuilt and enlarged, and in the end of 19th century, the building was dismantled and replaced by Neo-Renaissance New Town Hall.

After the war, in the years 1950-1960, object was reconstructed based on existing iconographic drawings. It is a single-story building covered with a very high, steep roof. In the end of 19th century, all elements of Renaissance decor were moved to the Town Hall.
