Imperial Castle

Local name: Zamek Cesarski w Poznaniu

Imperial Castle in Poznan is one of the latest objects of this kind in Europe. It was built at the request of Emperor Wilhelm II, who personally agreed on the plan of his residence. At present the castle is a registered office of a Cultural Center "Zamek", an Animation Theatre and the Poznan 1956 Uprising Museum, as well as the "Palace Cinema".

Building was built at the beginning of the previous century. It was created on the plan of an irregular polygon in the neo-Romanesque style. During the Second World War it was transformed into the headquarters of Adolf Hitler. After the war, due to the previous owner, they wanted to destroy it. But there was a change of decision – the symbols of Third Reich were removed and building was partially rebuild.

The present host of the castle is the Cultural Center. Several apartments were transformed into exhibition and concert halls and in the Throne Room there is a Great Hall. A fountain modeled on the 13th-century fountain of lions from the Alhambra in Granada was erected in the courtyard. Concerts, theatre performances and movie screenings are being held there. A stone commemorating the victims of the Katyń massacre was placed in the square next to the castle.
