Former Jesuits College

Local name: Kolegium Pojezuickie

Former Jesuits College in Poznań is a post-monastery complex. Nowadays it is a seat of a Poznań City Hall, but once it was a residence of one of the most prestige and modern universities of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

A scheme of a building is close to the shape of a horseshoe. It consists of three wings - main, i.e. south and two adjacent - eastern and western. In 18th century a one-story southern part with a gate was added. Pink college elevation is divided by white pilasters and cornices. There is a court in the middle. Interesting and also the oldest element is a bronze post located near the entrance gate. It is a clapper, which fell from the former collegiate of Saint Mary Magdalene.

Previously a collegiate was a university. During the nature classes experiments were carried out, what made it a very modern institution. Moreover there were an observatory and school theatre. Jesuits wanted to transform a Collegiate into a university, but Cracovian Academy objected to it, claiming that one such institution in the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland is enough.
