Church of St. Martin

Local name: Kościół św. Marcina

The church is a main place of Saint Martin cult. Each year on 11th November, a famous Saint Martin procession of Poznań begins here. Church of St. Martin is a small gothic temple with a very stormy history. It was a witness of granting city rights to Poznań, and due to its embroiled fortune, one can see exhibits from various ages here.

Church was probably built in the first half of 13th century, before Poznań became a city. In its neighborhood, a village of Saint Martin evolved. It was incorporated to the city only in 18th century. Numerous fires, plunders and war damage caused the church style to be mixed.

The oldest part consists of the main aisle and a presbytery. It is a gothic building with a steep roof. Three-aisled interior is covered with a starry vaults. The main altar with 15th century triptych showing Mother of God with a Baby Jesus, St. Catharine and St. John is very precious. Polychromes painted on bricks, that are covering the walls, dates back to the mid-twentieth century. During that time, a new stained glass windows were also fitted.

The Church of St. Martin is famous for being a place, from which a procession celebrating its patron's feast starts. On 11th of November, it moves in the direction of the Imperial Castle, where the Saint takes the power over the city for one day.
