Osowiec Fortress

Local name: Twierdza Osowiec

The Osowiec Fortress was built by the Russians in the second half of the 19th century on the narrowing of the Biebrza marshes. It protected the railway and communication route Białystok - Kaliningrad, and during numerous wars it also served a strategic function. As one of the few buildings of this type has never been taken over.

The whole consists of four forts: Fort I - Central, Fort II - Over-River, Fort III - Swedish, and Fort IV - New. Some of them were destroyed during wars. Currently, objects number I and III are owned by the army, however the routes have been separated which are made available to visitors.

On the facility area the Museum of the Osowiec Fortress is located, where visitors can learn about the history of the construction of the fortress, as well as look over military uniforms, weapons used in battles, and many other items related to the army. There is also a possibility of guided tours of the marked aboveground areas and part of the underground corridors of the vast Fort I.
