Tykocin Royal Castle

Local name: Zamek Królewski w Tykocinie

The Castle in Tykocin is a Renaissance royal building built in the 15th century, located on the right bank of the Narew River. Thanks to the plans preserved in Saint Petersburg, the stronghold was partially reconstructed after the local population dismantled it in 18th century, in order to obtain building material.

The castle was built for the king Sigismund II Augustus. The building on the trapezoidal plan had a courtyard and four towers placed at the corners. A dozen or so meters from the walls of the stronghold, defensive walls with four roundel bastions were built, and the whole was surrounded by a moat. The interiors of the castle were richly decorated.

Currently, visitors can admire only the southern wing with towers and part of the north-west wing. In the basement there is an exhibition of the history of the Castle in Tykocin in context of the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the exhibition of old weapons. A large tiled stove has been restored in the Glass Hall.

It is also worth entering the former prison tower, which is currently the highest vantage point. Visitors can observe the life of storks from close-up in there. In the castle are also located restaurant and guest rooms.
