Cathedral of Saint Alexander Nevsky is a 19th century Orthodox church built in the centre of Łódź in honor of the rescue from assassination of tsar Alexander II. It is a building on the central plan, with a gilded dome and a chunky tower over the vestibule. In the interior, covered with polychromes, you can see the iconostasis made in Saint Petersburg in the late 19th century.
The construction of the temple was initiated by the authorities of the Piotrków governorate. On the one hand, it had to be an expression of gratitude for the rescue of tsar Alexander II from the assassination, and on the other hand, an operation related to the post-uprising Russification of Polish territories. The Łódź industrialists of different religions, including Izrael Poznański and Karol Scheibler, contributed to the construction of the church.Cathedral of Saint Alexander Nevsky is a Russian-Byzantine-style building. Above the nave an elevated dome is set, and above the entrance a tower topped with an onion-shaped tented roof. The outer walls are made of coloured stone, which also refers to the tradition of Eastern sacral architecture. The interior of the temple is decorated with figural polychrome from the late 19th century. It presents Jesus, Mary, saints, and prophets. A wooden iconostasis with icons originating in Russia comes from from the same period.Less
