Vasa Chapel is a national mausoleum of the royal family built by Sigismund III Vasa. It is located in the south part of the nave. The square, Baroque chapel is topped by a dome. It has richly decorated interiors with stuccos, sculptural decorations, and wall paintings depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
Vasa Chapel was built in the place of the 13th-century Romanesque Prandocina's chapel where the first grave of Stanislaus of Szczepanów was probably located. It was founded by Sigismund III Vasa after the death of his wife Anne of Austria. He also provided funding for maintenance and everyday masses for him.The chapel's exterior is a copy of the Sigismund Chapel. A crypt where members of the Vasa Dynasty rest is located under its floor. The chapel is a square building with a dome placed on the tholobate. Lighting is provided by sun rays coming through round windows of the tholobate and roof lantern on the top. The interiors are richly decorated. They are made of marble in which epitaphs of members of the royal dynasty were inscribed. It also has stucco decorations on the walls and inside the dome. Other decorations include Baroque paintings depicting scenes from the life of Mother of God. The early-Baroque altar made of dark wood can be seen on the west wall.Less
