Chapel of the Passion of the Lord, also called Czartoryski Chapel, is located on the ground floor of the Clock Tower of the Wawel Cathedral. In the beginning, it was used as a chapter house. In the 19th century, it was changed into the mausoleum of the Czartoryski Family. It consists of the Gothic vault with the polychromy from the beginning of the 20th century, and the Neo-Gothic triptych with sculptures by Stanislaus Stoss, son of Veit Stoss.
The ground floor of the 14th-century Clock Tower was used as a chapter house in the Middle Ages. Since 1603, after moving chapter house to a different building, the room was empty. In the 19th century, Władysław Czartoryski became interested in it and got permission to change it into the tomb for his family. The original stone walls and lierne were left unchanged. The late-Gothic sculptures depicting the crucifixion of Jesus were put in the Neo-Gothic altar and triptych by Teofil Żebrawski. Sculptures are said to be made by Stanislaus, son of Veit Stoss. At the beginning of the 20th century, the vault has been covered with the Neo-Gothic polychrome. The epitaph of Władysław Czartoryski can be seen on the wall. The entrance to the Royal Tombs can also be found in the chapel.Less
