The Dragon's Cave is a karst cave located in the Wawel Hill. There is a tourist route in it that's 82 meters long. At the entrance to the Dragon's Cave there is a monument of the Wawel Dragon, which occasionally breathes fire.
The cave in Wawel Hill was already known in the Middle Ages. It was used in the past as an inn, a shelter for beggars or a warehouse. During the Austrian times, its entrance was walled up and a well was led out from the Thieves' Tower side. In 1918, Adolf Szyszko Bohusz used it to build stairs leading to the cave chambers.Dragon's Cave took its name from the legend of the Wawel Dragon. He was to live in a grotto at the foot of the castle and oppress the inhabitants of Krakow. To the public the cave has been open since 1974. From 300 meters of corridors just over 80 can be visited. To several chambers, whose walls in many places have been reinforced with a brick wall, you go down through a well that was let in Austrian times from the Thieves' Tower side.Less
