Chapel of Our Lady of the Scapular
Local name: Kaplica Matki Bożej Szkaplerznej
Located inside:
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Piasek
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Scapular was built in the 17th century in the place of the former cemetery. Since the beginning, it was the headquaters of the Kraków Brothers of Saint Scapular. The interior consists of the beautiful Neo-Baroque altar with the painting of the chapel's patron. It is worth to take a look at the Rococo side altars, the matroneum with the 18th-century pipe organs, and paintings depicting miracles of the Scapular on the vault.
Because of the big popularity of the Scapular in the past ages, wealthy citizens often founded decorative procession floats and banners for the chapel. The most famous pieces of art of that type are the 18th-century procession floats of Saint Joseph and Saint Elijah (painted by Kazimierz Mołodziński), the Crucifixion by Maciej Kloczkowski, and the banner of Our Lady of Piasek embroidered by Józefa Sołtykówna, Visitation Sister.Less
