Sanctuary of Our Lady of Piasek

Local name: Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Piaskowej

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Piasek, located near the monastery of Kraków's Carmelites, is the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It consists of one of the largest in Europe Baroque altars with the depiction of the Visitation of Saint Elisabeth. Figures of Saints Elijah, Elisha, Peter, and Paul are placed at the sides. A very interesting part of the decor is the 18th-century Golgotha.

The stone with imprinted footprint can be found in the wall on Garbarska Street. It's the foot of Jadwiga of Poland. The legend says that while overseeing construction of the church Jadwiga stood on one of the stones to remove gold buckle from her shoe and give it to the poor.

The construction of the church started in 1395. It was founded by Saint Jadwiga of Poland and Władysław II Jagiełło. One of the pretenders to the Polish throne - Prince Henry XI of Legnica - is buried here.
