St. Anne's Church

Local name: Kościół św. Anny

St. Anne's Church in Kraków, a university church of the Jagiellonian University, is located in close proximity to Collegium Medicum and Collegium Maius. It is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Poland. The main altar consists of the painting depicting the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne by Eleuter Siemiginowski, court painter of John III Sobieski. The late-Baroque pipe organs, the only one which preserved original sound from the then times, are placed in the chancel.

The rich, opulently decorated interior was designed by Baltazar Fontana. Especially worthy of attention is the monumental tomb of Saint John Cantius, patron saint of the Jagiellonian University. The coffin is supported by four characters - symbols of four faculties of the university: Theology, Philosophy, Law, and Medicine. The monument of Nicolaus Copernicus from 1823 which was unveiled in Poland as first can also be found in the church.
