Chapel of Our Lady of Piasek

Local name: Kaplica Matki Bożej Piaskowej

Spacious Chapel of Our Lady of Piasek, designed by Giovanni Trevano, is attached to the monastery and church of Kraków's Carmelites. Its characteristic part is a dome topped with the gilded statue of Mother of God with the Child from 1678. The miraculous painting of Our Lady of Piasek was painted in the 15th century directly on the church's wall by one of monastics. Worthy of attention are also crowns by Jan Matejko decorating the painting. It was here where in 1864 Matejko married Teodora Giebułtowska.

The chapel is also known for a visit of John III Sobieski who in 1683 prayed here before setting off to Vienna. On the 200th anniversary of the famous battle in Vienna, Bishop Albin Dunajewski carried out the coronation of the painting. Despite several damages (the most serious took place during the Swedish Deluge), the image of Our Lady of Piaskowa preserved in untouched, original shape.
