National Museum

Local name: Muzeum Narodowe

The National Museum in Cracow can pride oneself on a rich and varied collection of art, including a few priceless pieces from different regions and ages. The basis of the collection consists either of the works of the Polish artists or directly connected to the country. One can admire "Beautiful Virgin Mary from Krużlowa", "Nero's Torches" by Henryk Siemiradzki, "Frenzy of Exultations" by Wladyslaw Podkowiński, many pieces of art of Matejko and Wyspianski, as well as "Lady with an Ermine" by Leonardo da Vinci.

The National Museum was established in 1879. Together with its development and growing number of collections it was gradually receiving - both from the city or private founders - a new buildings destined for its expositions. Today, besides the exhibitions in the Main Building, one can visit also different branches of the museum located in historical buildings in the city. What is peculiar in the structure of this institution is the existence of biographic museums to recall the most outstanding artists of Cracow.
