Juliusz Słowacki Theatre

Local name: Teatr im. Juliusza Słowackiego

Juliusz Słowacki Theatre is considered one of the most valuable architectonic objects of that type in Europe since the beginning of its existence. The interiors consist of, among others, frescos by Vienna's artist Anton Tuch, famous curtain by Henryk Siemiradzki, and busts of authors of Polish theatre (Wyspiański, Fredro, Bogusławski). The monumental checkroom of Ludwik Solski is located near the stage.

The theatre's building is a great example of eclecticism in architecture with the domination of Neo-Baroque. It was built in the years between 1891 and 1893 according to a design of Jan Zawiejski. It was the first building with electric light in Kraków.

Juliusz Słowacki Theatre is one of the most known and meritorious theatres in Poland. It operates since 1893 as a national theatre. It is proven by the inscription on the facade - "To national art. Kraków" The best plays by Stanisław Wyspiański including the most famous - The Wedding - had their premieres here.
