Cracow's Planty is a city garden surrounding Old Town. It's the only object of that type in Europe. Planty was entered in the provincial register of monuments and UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage site.
Monuments of people important for Poland and Cracow were put there almost since the beginning of the park's existence. The first person was the initiator of the idea of creating Planty - Florian Straszewski. The monuments of Jadwiga and Władysław Jagiełło, Lilla Weneda, Artur Grottger, Nicolaus Copernicus and Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński can also be found there. The park has 4km in length and covers the area of 21,03ha. It's divided into eight gardens: Wawel, University, Palace of Art, Florianka, Barbican, Dworzec, Gródek, and Stradom. Planty was built in the place of former fortifications surrounding the city: defensive walls, moat, and ramparts. The decision of making them was made in 1820. They quickly became the place for strolls, social meetings, and even national events.Less
