The Kraków Barbican is a Gothic-style defensive construction built at the end of the 15th century. Only three medieval buildings of that type preserved to this day in Europe. The Barbican together with the only preserved part of the city walls is opened for visits in the summer season.
The 3-meters thick Barbican walls make a ring with the large courtyard inside. In the past, the Barbican was surrounded with the moat and connected to Florian Gate by the bridge. The only thing that remained after the moat is the ditch surrounding the fortification. The courtyard is used as a place for various events and festivals such as fencing competitions, tournaments, and court dance shows.Less
