Jan Matejko House

Local name: Dom Jana Matejki

Jan Matejko House is a department of the National Museum in Kraków dedicated to Jan Matejko, the most prominent Polish painter of historism movement. It consists of the exhibition presenting life and works of the artist including his most popular pieces of art such as "Self-portrait" from 1887. There are also organized temporary exhibitions.

In 1895, the family apartment of Matejko situated in the old tenement house was bought on the initiative of Marian Sokołowski. The existing house-museums such as the house of Michael Angelo in Florentia became an inspiration for commemorating the artist this way. Apart from the building, part of the collection, which can be admired in the residential rooms to this day, were also purchased. The tenement house was rebuilt. In 1904, it became a part of the National Museum.

The first floor consists of the bedroom and living room while the room where the painter was born is on the second floor. His workshop can be found on the third floor.
