The most characteristic part of Matejko Square is the equestrian statue of Władysław II Jagiełło, unveiled in 1910 on the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald. The monument was designed by Antoni Wiwulski and Franciszek Black. It was gifted by world-famous pianist Ignacy Paderewski. The words "To the glory of our forefathers - To our brothers to hearten their spirits." were inscribed on the plinth. The marble plate of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was built in the stairs leading to the monument.
It was destroyed by Germans during World War II. In 1972, the Committee of the Grunwald Monument Reconstruction was established. It was re-created by Marian Konieczny. On 16th October 1976, it was back in the old place. The square was named Matejko in 1882 on the occasion of bestowing the title of Honorary Citizen of Kraków to the painter which took place during his lifetime. The plaque built in the wall of the present Kraków Academy of Fine Arts located near the square is a testimony of Matejko's contribution to art and the nation in the 19th century.Less
