Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theatre

Local name: Teatr Śląski im. Stanisława Wyspiańskiego

The theater was founded in 1907 and since the beginning of its existence, it has its headquarters in the building at the Katowice Market Square. The theater building was designed in the neoclassical style by Carl Moritz (the author of the opera in Cologne and several German theaters).

This theater is the largest dramatic stage in Upper Silesia and an important cultural institution of the region. There are theater plays in the Silesian dialect and other texts important for regional identity. Śląski Theater has four stages: Big Scene, Chamber, Malarnia and Gallery.

This institution was established as a German theater, which was emphasized by the inscription on the facade: “German Word - German Art”. In the 1970s, it was replaced by the Polish inscription: “St. Wyspiański Theater”. Stanisław Wyspiański became the patron of the theater in 1936.
