Cathedral of Christ the King

Local name: Archikatedra Chrystusa Króla

The archcathedral of Christ the King in Katowice is a very massive, magnificent sacred building in the classicist style. The interior of the church is kept in art deco style. It is the largest cathedral in Poland. Particularly noteworthy in the church is the ornate main altar and the figure of Christ the King of the Universe rising above it, as well as the colorful stained-glass windows adorning the windows of the cathedral.

The cathedral in Katowice was built for almost 25 years and the construction was completed in 1955. Its walls are built of dolomite mined nearby. The cathedral in the southern part of Katowice was built on the site of a former brickyard, on a square plan. The construction of the church lasted a long time because it was interrupted by the Second World War. After the war, construction was resumed, but the project was slightly modified.
