Palm House in Gdańsk Oliwa

Local name: Palmiarnia Parku Oliwskiego

Palm House in Oliwa Park originated from the monastery winter garden made in the second half of the 18th century. Exotic and immune to cold plants were grown here. They were brought by Cistercians from the entire world. Today, Palm House in Oliwa Park consists of, among others, banana trees, Araucaria, Philodendron, cactuses, Agave, Opuntia, Ficus, Orchis, Cycadales, and many other exotic plants. Jewel of the palm house is the date-palm growing here since the first half of the 19th century - the only such specimen in Poland.

The palm house contained a brick ground-floor building with glass south wall on a rectangular plan and a 19-meter tall glass rotunda until 2017. In 2013, the date-palm damaged the dome of glass rotunda what resulted in its demolition in 2017. The new cylindrical construction with a height of 24 m and a width of 17 m was built in that place.

The Oliwa's date-palm was brought by monastics to Gdańsk as a dactyl. Growing tree forced progressive expansions of the greenhouse and later rotunda. Date-palms grow even up to 25 m in height. The specimen in Oliwa still grows despite its old age.
