The platform has a height of 15m and is located on Pachołek Hill (100,8m) which peak can be accessed by the stairs. The panorama of Gdańsk Bay can be admired from the viewing platform. Current metal construction was built in 1975 by Mostostal. It replaced the 19th-century brick tower which, in 1945, was blown by retreating German soldiers.
Pachołek Hill, also called Pachołek Mountain, since 1186 was a property of the abbey of the Oliwa's Cistercians. After the dissolution of the monastery after the First Partition of Poland, the ownership passed to Prussia and in 1734 was renamed into Pacholkenberg. From 1797 to 1945 it bore the name of Carlsberg or Karlsberg (Karol's Hill). In 1797 the hill was visited by the king of Prussia Frederick William III himself in the company of his wife Louise. The neighboring hill (currently Kościuszko's Hill) was named Luisenberg in her honor. In 1889 the obelisk topped with the sculpture of Prussian eagle was placed there. In 1945 the eagle was replaced with the head of Sigismund III Vasa, however, it was lost in the 1990s and wasn't recreated during the monument's renovation in 2014.Less
