Sonnenborgh Museum & Observatory

Sonnenborgh is a public astronomical observatory located in a powerful fortress of the 16th century. In addition to the observatory, there is also a museum of meteorology, astronomy and exhibitions dedicated to the history of the bastion. Numerous demonstration lessons are organized for students of all ages and scientific activities are carried out. Famous scientists associated with Sonnenborgh are Marcel Minnaert and Kees de Jager.
During the conservation and renovation works carried out in 2001, the remains of the first chemical laboratory in Utrecht were found. It was in this fortress around 1695 and was led by Johann Conrad Barchusen.
The fortress itself was built in the years 1544-1558 on the orders of Emperor Charles V. Four stone strongholds were built in the middle of the Stadsbuitengracht. The featured was built under the supervision of the city architect Willem van Noort.
