Museum Catharijneconvent
Local name: Museum Catharijneconvent
The Catharijneconvent Museum in Utrecht, or the Museum of the Convention of Saint Catherine, is a museum of sacred art, which is housed in the former St. John's monastery at the church of St. Catherine. It is the only museum of sacred art in the world whose collections include both Catholic and Protestant monuments. The oldest exhibits come from the early Middle Ages, and the latest from the 21st century.
The Catharijneconvent Museum has an extremely rich collection of paintings, sculptures and other plastic arts, but also artistic crafts (textiles, ceramics, goldsmiths, painting, books). These exhibits can be viewed as part of two permanent exhibitions and periodically organized temporary exhibitions.
The museum was founded in 1979 and has been operating under its current name since 1995. The purpose of its creation was to gather in one place valuable sacred monuments that were previously scattered in various institutions.
