Castellum Hoge Woerd
Local name: Castellum Hoge Woerd
Castellum Hoge Woerd is a contemporary architectural and functional variation on the theme of a Roman fortress. In the first centuries AD a Roman defensive structure was erected in this place, whose well-preserved foundations were discovered in 1997. One of the most interesting finds was the almost complete Roman river ship that is currently exhibited in Castellum.
To preserve and present a valuable find, a cultural park was created in 2007 at the site of the excavations. There is a municipal farm with live animals, a theater stage, a cinema, a cafe, a restaurant, an archaeological museum, workshop and lecture rooms.
The Castellum Hoge Woerd building, designed by the Skets Architectuurstudio architectural studio, is an example of sustainable construction - using natural energy (in the basement there is a cold store, solar tower on the watchtower), made of durable and ecological materials.
