Royal Museum of Antiquities

Local name: Rijksmuseum van Oudheden

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden Leiden is the State Museum of Antiquities, which has one of the world's most valued collections of exhibits from ancient Egypt, as well as valuable cultural monuments of Greece and Rome. The most interesting and valuable are sarcophagi from Egyptian tombs and temples - considered to be the best preserved monuments of this type outside of Egypt.

In the museum courtyard, the temple of Taffe was reconstructed, from the first century AD In the fourth century, it was transformed into a place of worship of Isis. The building came to the Netherlands as a gift from the Egyptian government - proof of gratitude for participating in research work in Nubia and saving monuments threatened by flooding after the construction of the great dam in Assuana.

The Egyptian collection consists of over 1,400 objects - mummies, sarcophagi, sculptures, everyday objects. Egyptian halls occupy the entire ground floor of the museum. Renovated in 2016, they are equipped with multimedia presentations that allow you to learn about the history of ancient Egypt, embalming technique or look inside the mummy.
