Van Abbemuseum is a center for contemporary art founded in 1936 by Henri van Abbe - a cigarette manufacturer, art lover and avid collector. Van Abbe donated part of his private collection to public purposes. Currently, there are about 3,000 in the museum's collection. paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations. Among the authors are such names as El Lissitzky and Pablo Picasso.
World-class artists whose works have been shown or featured in the Van Abbemuseum collection are hundreds of the most important names of contemporary art. Among the classics it is worth mentioning Oskar Kokoschka, Kazimier Malewicz, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Andy Warhol - among the younger ones, among others, Boris Nieslony, Gabriel Orozco, Artur Żmijewski and the most top critical artist, Marina Abramovic.
