Museum 1940-1945
Local name: Museum 1940-1945
A small, regional historical museum that shows the fate of Dordrecht and the surrounding area during World War II. Photographs, documents, weapons, uniforms, military vehicles and souvenirs from those times are presented here.
Dordrecht was strategically located at the fork of rivers and on the main communication routes of the Netherlands. Because of this, bloody fights took place in 1940. During the war, the resistance movement was active here. The city was liberated, again after a heavy battle in 1944.
The museum was established shortly after the war to preserve the memory of those times. Thanks to this, it was possible to record and later record many eyewitness accounts of events. The museum also displays films showing the development of German Nazism, the organization of the resistance movement in the Netherlands, or the Allied operation that led to the liberation of the region.
