Dordrechts Museum
Local name: Dordrechts Museum
The Dordrechts Museum was founded in 1842 and is one of the oldest museums and image galleries in the Netherlands. His collection covers a period of six hundred years - from the masters of the Golden Age to the present day. The most valuable works in the museum's collection include paintings, among others brothers Abraham and Jacob van Strij, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruchstraat, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Jacob Maris and Jan Toorop.
The Dordrechts Museum has the world's largest collection of works by Ara Scheffer (1795-1858), one of the highly-valued and best-paid artists of his time. The core of the collection was a private collection taken over after the death of Leendert Dupper (1799-1870) - a sugar manufacturer, amateur painter and avid art collector.
The history of the Dordrechts Museum began on May 2, 1842, when five citizens from Dordrecht, headed by mayor Jacob Cornelis Jantzon van Erffrenten (1769-1859), issued a notice to the citizens about their intention to establish the first repository of works in the city.
