Ship Mahu-880

Local name: Schip Mahu-880

A Place Beyond Belief is a remnant of the largest shipyard in Amsterdam on the northern bank of the IJ River, from which in the 20th century hundreds of famous ships and supertankers sailed on their first voyages. In the eighties, despite many efforts, Amsterdam shipbuilding collapsed. Currently, the district is experiencing its renaissance and has become a popular district of artists, journalists and alternative youth.

Former industrial areas have become very attractive for artists looking for cheap places for their ateliers or halls, where they can easily create art. The former shipyard is also the site of many cultural events. Events such as Over het IJ Festival, Valtifest, NDSM Vrijhaven and the Giant flea market at IJ-Hallen are held here. Monumental art is created and presented in the public space of the shipyard, thanks to which it can affect the senses much more than in a museum.
